GRASSLAND RESTORATION BY MOWING
The role of mowing in grassland restoration was a significant part of my Ph.D. thesis. We analysed the effect of mowing on vegetation and seed bank composition comparing vegetation records and seed bank data from abandoned an mown sites of acidic fen and dry-mesophilous meadows in the Zemplén mountains, in Hungary.
GRASSLAND RESTORATION BY SOWING
In the Hortobágy National Park in the recent years about 1000ha former croplands were transformed into grasslands using low diversity seed mixtures. The vegetation changes (cover, biomass, seed bank) were analysed using permanent plots. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of seed sowing in grassland restoration and weed suppression.
There is an increasing demand to link theories of spontaneous vegetation development with restoration activities. The use of spontaneous succession in grassland recovery in several cases can help mending costs and improving success. In our projects we aim at to study the spontaneous grassland recovery in sandy, loess and alkali soils with a complex vegetation and seed bank sampling.
SEED BANK STUDIES
One of the key factors in grassland dynamics and regeneration is the soil seed bank. In cooperation with the Botanical Garden and Department of Botany, University of Debrecen we study the seed bank composition of several grassland types using seedling emergence method. Our current projects aim at to study the role of seed banks in grassland restoration and vegetation dynamics.
Grassland managers and scientists are increasingly interested in cost-effective, ways of grassland biodiversity conservation. Prescribed burning is a promising tool which should be integrated in the planning of management efforts. Small-scale prescribed burning is an effective fire suppression strategy to decrease the negative impacts of uncontrolled burnings on ecosystems and human life. We assess the effect of burning on vegetation in several grassland types.
HIGH DIVERSITY SEED MIXTURES
Using high diversity seed mixtures a high number of target species can be trasferred to the restoration sites. High diversity mixtures were used in several grassland restoration actions; however, the composition of the mixture regularly uncertain and several species cannot be bought commercially. In our studies we test the usefulness and aplicability of high diversity mixtures in various soil types.
